Subject: | Amendment to PFA Act |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that will address a gap in the law relating to Protection from Abuse (PFA) orders. Currently, Pennsylvania law does not fully contemplate a situation where a PFA is filed and/or issued against a stepparent on behalf of a minor child. Specifically, there is a lack of notification to the other biological parent or legal guardian relating to this PFA, which could limit the ability for them to advocate for or attend hearings on the child’s behalf. My bill would require notification to any parent or guardian that shares custody rights of a minor for which a PFA has been filed and/or issued on behalf of the child. Further, all notices relating to this court action will be served to the same people. I believe these changes will address the loophole and will help to further protect children across the Commonwealth. Please join me in cosponsoring this important legislation. |
