Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2023 - 2024 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 5, 2023 09:44 AM
From: Senator Scott Martin and Sen. Wayne Langerholc, Jr., Sen. David G. Argall
To: All Senate members
Subject: Designating the 2023 "School Bus Safety Week" in Pennsylvania

In the near future, we intend to introduce a resolution designating the week of October 16-20, 2023, as “School Bus Safety Week” in Pennsylvania in accordance with National School Bus Safety Week as announced by both the National Association for Pupil Transportation and Pennsylvania’s Department of Transportation (PennDOT).

According to the Pennsylvania School Bus Association (PSBA), each year approximately 450,000 school buses travel an estimated 4.3 billion miles transporting roughly 23.5 million students to and from school and school-related activities. In communities across our Commonwealth, school bus drivers transport our children with an incredible safety record and a fatality rate at a fraction of the rate experienced by general motorists.

PennDOT provides information for drivers, parents and student-passengers as a general reminder to increase safety. This includes obeying general traffic laws like the observance of school zone safety protocols while driving and coming to a full stop when driving behind a bus, meeting the bus or approaching an intersection where a bus is stopped. Motorists following or traveling alongside a school bus must also stop until the red lights have stopped flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn and all children have exited the road and reached safety.

Our resolution intends to highlight these safety precautions and bring awareness to all the work school bus drivers do to guarantee our most precious resource, our children, arrive at their destinations on time, safely. Raising awareness of the importance of safety for our school bus drivers, student-passengers and motorists sharing the roads with our buses is critically important to children, families and communities back home in our districts.

Additional information and resources regarding School Bus Safety Week in PA has been provided by PSBA and can be accessed (here).

Please join us in co-sponsoring this resolution to emphasize the importance of protecting our children as they travel and thanking our school bus drivers for the work they do throughout our Commonwealth.
