Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2023 - 2024 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 22, 2022 03:46 PM
From: Senator Wayne Langerholc, Jr.
To: All Senate members
Subject: Illegible Military Registration Plates

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that will waive the replacement fee and automatically reissue military registration plates.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) currently waives replacement plate fees for standard and personalized vehicle plates that are no longer legible from a reasonable distance. In order for this to occur, an individual must contact a law enforcement officer or an authorized representative of PennDOT to verify that the plate is in fact illegible.

The need for this legislation was showcased at the several  License Plate Replacement events I have hosted across my district. PennDOT continues to charge veterans who are proud to display their service and have already given so much to keep us free and protect our communities.

My legislation will require PennDOT to automatically reissue military registration plates to eliminate this hurdle for our veterans.  If a military registration plate becomes illegible prior to the automatic reissuance, my legislation will also ensure the replacement fee is waived.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this common-sense legislation to support our veterans.
