MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 23, 2023 09:48 AM
From: Representative Jamie L. Flick
To: All House members
Subject: Automated Speed Enforcement

In recent years, our law enforcement agencies have been under increasing pressure to allocate their limited resources effectively and enhance public safety. Unfortunately, some portions of our current law make it harder for our police to safely manage our communities.

Under current law, radar and speedometers are required to be calibrated every year.  However, electronic timing devices, although having been proven to withstand longer calibration cycles, are subject to a calibration cycle of 60 days. This current 60-day calibration requirement for electronic timing devices not only consumes valuable time and resources, but also poses significant logistical challenges for our officers.

My legislation will synchronize the calibration requirements between radar, speedometers, and electronic timing devices, and allow for technicians to electronically complete a certificate of accuracy for the equipment.

Public safety remains a top priority and this legislation will not compromise the accuracy of timing devices. It will simply align our law enforcement with industry best practices while reducing an administrative burden on our police departments.

I hope you will join me in sponsoring this crucial piece of legislation.
