Subject: Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month – March 2024
 
Currently, colorectal cancer is the third most diagnosed cancer and the second most deadly cancer in Pennsylvania. This cancer takes too many lives even though screening and treatment for early stages are highly effective.
 
When colorectal cancer is caught early it is highly treatable, and simple screening procedures can easily identify growths that are potentially cancerous. Colonoscopies, which are the gold standard of colon cancer screening, can both diagnose colon cancer and remove polyps that can become cancerous. This procedure can reduce the likelihood of new cases of colon cancer by 69% and reduce the chance of dying of the cancer by 88%. However, even though adults over the age of 45 are advised to be screened for colorectal cancer, only two-thirds of Pennsylvanians over the age of 45 have been screened.
 
To increase awareness about this cancer and to encourage people to seek out preventative screening, we will be introducing a resolution to recognize March 2024 as “Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.”
One in 24 people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and between 750,000 and 1,000,000 Americans have an ostomy as part of treatment. This cancer and its treatments are common and need to be recognized to help promote awareness, so please join us in cosponsoring this resolution to recognize March 2024 as “Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.”
