Subject: | Easing Housing Access with Reusable Tenant Screenings |
It is becoming more and more expensive and difficult to rent an apartment. The average American renter pays more than 30 percent of their income on housing. Increased rental prices are coupled with increased rental application fees and tenant screenings. Overall, the process to rent has become expensive, complex, and burdensome. In a demanding rental market, often applicants must submit many applications and complete many screenings before settling on a new home. My legislation, a companion bill to Senator Schwank’s Senate Bill 859, would simplify the rental application process by allowing reusable tenant screening reports. Specifically, this legislation would establish criteria for the reports to include standard tenant information for the landlord or rental company. This information could be utilized for many rental applications saving the tenant and landlord both time and money. The demand for rentals has remained consistent since surging during the pandemic. Increased demand allowed landlords and rental companies to drastically increase rent and rental application fees. Renters deserve relief in any step of the rental process and my legislation would provide just one simple solution. Please join me in simplifying the rental application process by establishing criteria for reusable tenant screening reports. |
