Subject: | Disabilities Awareness Month |
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, up to one in four adults in the United States have a form of disability. In Pennsylvania, over 2.6 million adults – more than a quarter of the state’s population – have a disability. Under federal and state law, individuals with disabilities are provided certain protections. Sadly, discriminatory practices towards individuals with disabilities still persist in areas such as school, employment, and accommodations. Therefore, we are introducing a resolution to designate March 2023 as “Disabilities Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. This resolution would recognize the prevalence of inequities within our society regarding the treatment of individuals with disabilities, as well as acknowledge the efforts made throughout history to institute civil protections for all residents of the United States. We encourage you to co-sponsor this effort to help raise awareness of the injustices that Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable citizens face despite protections the law affords them. |
