Subject: | Recognizing October 2023 as “Spina Bifida Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania |
Spina bifida, a permanently disabling birth defect in which an area of the spinal column does not properly form, affects approximately 1,600 babies born each year in the United States. While children born with this condition can go on to lead full and active lives, it can also cause many impairments, such as partial paralysis, bowel and bladder disorders, and social issues, which negatively impact an individual’s quality of life. As the exact cause of spina bifida is unknown, it is crucial to bring attention to methods of prevention and early detection and to advocate for progress in the research and treatment of this condition. That is why we will be introducing a resolution recognizing October 2023 as “Spina Bifida Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. This will bring awareness to the more than 166,000 Americans living with spina bifida and recognize the efforts made by families and researchers to find a cure. Please join us in co-sponsoring this important resolution to call attention to and educate Pennsylvanians on spina bifida and those living with the condition. Thank you for your consideration. |
