MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 22, 2023 09:12 AM
From: Representative Christina D. Sappey and Rep. Dan K. Williams
To: All House members
Subject: Recognizing September 2023 as “Transcontinental Underground Railroad Month”

The Underground Railroad is a significant freedom movement in African American history. Numerous enslaved African Americans traversed Pennsylvania using the Underground Railroad during the 19th century in their quest for freedom. A multitude of safe houses, hiding places, and escape routes operated covertly throughout the state, and a multiracial network of Pennsylvanians risked their own freedom to help their compatriots escape bondage. The Underground Railroad was integral in the freedom and advancement of African American people in the past, as well as today.

It is essential that we recognize the impact of the Underground Railroad, as well as the inspirational efforts of the freedom seekers and abolitionists of Pennsylvania. For this reason, I plan to reintroduce a resolution recognizing September 2023 as “Transcontinental Underground Railroad Month” in Pennsylvania. This resolution will honor our great state and its people as well as all those who have fought and continue to fight for their freedom.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution and pay tribute to those who have taken great risks for freedom. Your consideration is greatly appreciated.
