Session of 2023 - 2024 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 13, 2023 01:38 PM
From: Representative Ismail Smith-Wade-El and Rep. Joseph C. Hohenstein, Rep. Sara Innamorato
To: All House members
Subject: Office of New Pennsylvanians

Immigrants are foundational to the character of the United States. When immigrants move to our nation for the promise of freedom and opportunity, everyone benefits from their contributions to our culture, community, and economy.

Roughly seven percent of Pennsylvania’s population is foreign-born, comprising over eight percent of our state’s work force and paying $3.3 billion yearly in state and local taxes. Unfortunately, these individuals are used as scapegoats for various issues facing our nation, and this sentiment leads to the creation of restrictive policies at the expense of losing skilled workers, entrepreneurs, consumers, and community leaders.

Living in communities where we treat each other like neighbors is the only way to a prosperous society, no matter what we look like or where we come from. To uphold these values, we are introducing a bill to create the “Office of New Pennsylvanians,” which is tasked with attracting, retaining, and embracing immigrants in our state.

Please join us in co-sponsoring this important legislation to respect and embrace Pennsylvania’s immigrant community. Your consideration is greatly appreciated.

Introduced as HB1630
