MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Pennsylvania State Grange

In the aftermath of the Civil War, America sought to rebuild and reconcile. During these critical years, a unique fraternity formed, striving to uplift and unify the American rural community. Founded in 1867 by seven visionaries, the Order of the Patrons of Husbandry, more commonly known as The Grange, emerged as a beacon of hope for the American way of life.

The Grange's influence arrived in Pennsylvania in 1871, and two years later, on September 18, 1873, a meeting in Reading marked the establishment of the Pennsylvania State Grange. This event was a historic milestone, signifying that 25 local Granges were active, united in their mission to enrich the Commonwealth's communities.

Over the years, the Grange has evolved from its roots as a farmer’s fraternity to a multifaceted community service organization. It actively advocates for rural and agricultural issues, embodies the spirit of fellowship, and promotes education and community service. The Grange proudly includes members of all ages, fostering an inclusive environment that embraces juniors, youth, and young adults alike.

Today, our Commonwealth is home to approximately 170 local Granges, counting nearly 5,700 dedicated members. These individuals tirelessly serve their communities, embodying the core values of the Grange and exemplifying the unity and perseverance that the founding members envisioned.

This year marks the 150th Anniversary of the Pennsylvania State Grange – a significant milestone that deserves recognition and celebration. In honor of this momentous occasion, I propose we designate September 18, 2023, as “State Grange Day” in Pennsylvania. By doing so, we celebrate not only the history and legacy of the Grange but also its enduring impact on our rural communities.

Join us in acknowledging this historic anniversary and continuing the Grange's rich tradition of service and advocacy. Let us recognize the profound contributions of the Grange to our Commonwealth and uplift the spirit of community that is at the heart of their work.
