MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 1, 2023 10:22 AM
From: Representative Dan L. Miller and Rep. Dave Madsen
To: All House members
Subject: Recognizing June 5-June 9 as “Union Organizing Week” in PA

In many ways, Pennsylvania was built by our unions. From our building trades to our public employees to our manufacturing workers, unions have powered our nation, grown our middle class, and helped foster a productive workforce that is second to none.

At the heart of this success is workers’ right to organize and collectively bargain. Enshrined in both federal and state law, this fundamental right acknowledges the key role workers play in producing wealth and strengthening businesses. It also understands that their labor is a benefit to the employer, and that their relationship must be fair, predictable and sustainable. Additionally, when our state and nation have a higher union density, we have seen lower rates of income inequality, reduced reliance on government assistance programs, and higher rates of job satisfaction.

Unfortunately, the free exercise of this right can sometimes be impeded by employers who incorrectly believe that the decision to unionize is theirs. Such employers work to discourage this decision, holding captive audience meetings and employing union-busting tactics to pressure workers to ignore their own self-interest.

But the right to organize is a worker right, it is a right that has benefited our state and nation, and it must be protected in every Pennsylvanian workplace, in every sector, in every part of our commonwealth.

Accordingly, please join us in recognizing June 5-June 9 as "Union Organizing Week" in Pennsylvania in order to thank those who often courageously stand up for themselves and their families when organizing their workplace and to encourage all Pennsylvanian workers to know their labor rights and to exercise them as they see fit.
