MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 18, 2023 03:23 PM
From: Representative Jose Giral
To: All House members
Subject: Special License Plates to Honor Borinqueneer Congressional Gold Medal Recipients

The 65th Infantry Regiment — the Borinqueneers — was formed shortly after Puerto Rico became part of the United States in 1898. The unit of Puerto-Rican and Latino men heroically served on behalf of the United States during World War I, World War II, and the Korean War.1 The service of the Borinqueneers is emblematic of the contributions to the armed forces that have been made by hundreds of thousands of brave and patriotic United States citizens from Puerto Rico. In recognition of their pioneering military service and acts of valor in the face of adversity, President Barack Obama awarded Puerto Rico’s 65th Infantry Regiment the Congressional Gold Medal on June 10, 2014.

The Congressional Gold Medal is one of the highest awards the United States bestows, and only a handful of military units have ever received this award. For these reasons, I will be introducing legislation to honor the distinguished recipients of the Borinqueneers Congressional Gold Medal with a special registration plate. The Borinqueneers’ unique sacrifices for our country deserve to be recognized and commemorated. Providing these veterans with a specialty plate is one way our Commonwealth can thank the Borinqueneers for their service.

Please join me in recognizing the honorable and resilient military service of Puerto Rico’s 65th Infantry Regiment by signing on to this legislation.
