Subject: | Requiring Car Insurance Providers to Provide Proof of Insurance of a New Policy rather than PA Drivers |
A constituent of the 50th Senatorial District contacted my office to inform me that when they recently changed their automobile insurance provider, they then received a notification from PennDOT requiring proof of insurance or their vehicle registration would be suspended. Currently, when a driver cancels their motor vehicle insurance policy, the insurer is required to report the cancelation to PennDOT. However, there is no requirement for an insurer to notify PennDOT when a driver acquires a new insurance policy. This legislation would fix this by requiring insurers to send a notification to PennDOT within 10 days of issuing new insurance. Currently, and often unknowingly, drivers may have to worry about being pulled over for appearing to be uninsured because their new insurance policy was not yet reported to PennDOT, but they are indeed insured. This legislation would address this so that if a driver is pulled over for this alleged violation, PennDOT may not impose penalties if the owner of a motor vehicle or the insurer furnishes proof of the required financial responsibility to PennDOT within 10 days. I hope you will join me in cosponsoring this important legislation. If you have any questions, please contact Fallon Binner at fbinner@pasen.gov. Thank you. |
