MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 23, 2023 12:01 PM
From: Representative Robert E. Merski and Rep. Chris Pielli
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution to Study Artificial Intelligence

Recent news stories and reports have shown the rapid acceleration of artificial intelligence utilization throughout the world. While AI has the potential to be a great tool, we must also be wary of its potential dangers and negative implications; whether it be an AI-generated voice clip of a politician or a health expert spouting disinformation, a fake memo written using a text-generating program or the threat it poses to labor and blue-collar workers through the automation of manufacturing and other jobs. As legislators, we should be aware of how AI is being implemented and used so that we can work to ensure it is done so ethically and responsibly in such a manner that benefits the Commonwealth and our citizens.

For these and many additional reasons, I will be introducing the House companion to Senator Kane’s Artificial Intelligence Joint State Government Commission (JSGC) Taskforce resolution, which directs the JSGC to establish an advisory committee to study and evaluate recent developments in the field of AI and its impacts and potential impacts on the Commonwealth and its citizens.

Please join me in supporting this resolution which aims to protect all our constituents and provide us as legislators with a better understanding of AI.
