MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 12, 2023 10:42 AM
From: Representative Ryan A. Bizzarro
To: All House members
Subject: Same day voter registration

Many people get interested in elections in the last few weeks prior to Election Day, but voter registration deadlines typically have passed at that point. Work needs to be done to make this process easier and more accessible to Pennsylvanians.

In an effort to promote voter registration and ensure that eligible Pennsylvanians have every opportunity to exercise their right to vote, I am introducing legislation to allow same-day voter registration (SDR). This commonsense and cost-effective update to our election system will give individuals the convenience of both registering to vote and casting their ballot on Election Day. Because the integrity of our elections is of the utmost importance, my legislation also addresses voter fraud concerns by not allowing a ballot cast by a same-day registrant to be counted until the Department of State has verified their eligibility.

As legislators, we must do all that we can to encourage people to exercise their voting rights as it is our job to serve them and their interests. Twenty other states in our nation have recognized the positive impact that SDR has on voter turnout. Please join me in offering SDR in Pennsylvania to ensure that all eligible voters have the opportunity to make their voices heard.
