A RESOLUTION
Designating October 23, 2015, as "World Polio Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Rotary International, founded on February 23, 1905,
in Chicago, Illinois, is the world's first and one of the
largest nonprofit service organizations; and
WHEREAS, In 1985, Rotary International launched Polioplus and
spearheaded the Global Polio Eradication Initiative with the
World Health Organization, the United States Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention and the United Nations Children's Fund to
immunize the children of the world against polio; and
WHEREAS, Polio cases have dropped by 99% since 1988 and the
world stands on the threshold of eradicating the disease; and
WHEREAS, Rotary International has contributed more than $1
billion and countless volunteer hours for the protection of more

than 2 billion children in 122 countries; and
WHEREAS, These efforts are providing much needed operational
support, medical personnel, laboratory equipment and educational
materials for health workers and parents; and
WHEREAS, Rotary International has played a major role in
decisions by donor governments to contribute $8 billion to the
effort; and
WHEREAS, The 12,147 Pennsylvanian Rotarians in 369 Rotary
clubs throughout this Commonwealth continue to sponsor service
projects to address such critical issues as poverty, health,
hunger, illiteracy and the environment in their local
communities and abroad; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate October
23, 2015, as "World Polio Day" in Pennsylvania and encourage all
residents to join in the fight for a polio-free world.
