A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the 75th anniversary of the American Diabetes
Association.
WHEREAS, Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects
individuals substantially on a daily basis; and
WHEREAS, Individuals who have diabetes cannot make enough or
properly use insulin, a hormone which is necessary for
converting sugar, or glucose, into energy; and
WHEREAS, Elevated blood sugar levels are associated with a
number of serious complications, such as heart attack, stroke,
blindness, amputation and kidney disease; and
WHEREAS, In America, more than 1 in 5 health care dollars are
spent on diabetes treatment; and

WHEREAS, The cost of diabetes in 2007 was estimated at $174
billion yearly and in 2012 the estimated cost was $245 billion,
a 41% increase over five years; and
WHEREAS, Diabetes costs companies, on average, $8,000 per
year per diabetic worker; and
WHEREAS, As many as one in three Americans will have diabetes
by 2050; and
WHEREAS, The year 2015 marks the 75th anniversary of the
American Diabetes Association (ADA), an organization that funds
research to prevent, cure and treat diabetes, provides
information to physicians and their patients and advocates for
people who are denied their rights because of their diabetes;
and
WHEREAS, During this important milestone year, the ADA is
honoring decades of progress in diabetes treatment, management
and quality of life and the ADA's role in these advancements;
and
WHEREAS, Throughout 2015, the ADA will create greater
awareness of the seriousness of diabetes by acknowledging past
discovery and improvement, while focusing on work that still
needs to be accomplished; and
WHEREAS, For the first time in the Delaware Valley region,
the ADA is convening a major public/private coalition of
national and regional leaders with the goal of finding solutions
to the urgent and devastating epidemic of diabetes; and
WHEREAS, The Philadelphia office of the ADA will host the
ADA's 75th Anniversary and Awards Celebration at the National
Constitution Center on October 7, 2015; and
WHEREAS, The event will highlight the valued national and
regional leaders in our community who are making a difference,

and the 75 years of ADA discovery, innovation and progress;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
75th anniversary of the American Diabetes Association.
