A RESOLUTION
Honoring and recognizing the individuals from this Commonwealth
who served as nurses during the Vietnam Conflict.
WHEREAS, Nurses served during the Vietnam Conflict in the
hospital ships of the Navy, the airlift helicopters and
airplanes of the Air Force and the hospitals and field hospitals
of the Army; and
WHEREAS, The nurses had various levels of nursing experience,
from newcomers in the field to experienced veterans; and
WHEREAS, Nurses served in active duty and reserve components
and did not have a typical tour of duty; and
WHEREAS, Combat nurses worked six days a week, 12 hours a
day, but when a mass casualty incident occurred those 12-hour

shifts could become much longer; and
WHEREAS, During the Tet Offensive of January 1968, sleep was
described as "the best recreation of all"; and
WHEREAS, The Vietnam Conflict was the first major conflict to
use helicopters to quickly transport the wounded to medical
facilities; and
WHEREAS, Due to the new medevac system, nurses were faced
with more patients and more severely wounded patients than in
previous conflicts; and
WHEREAS, Nurses treated patients under extreme conditions of
heat and humidity for battlefield injuries and illnesses such as
malaria, viral hepatitis, diarrheal disease, skin disease,
venereal disease and fevers of unknown origin; and
WHEREAS, Humor played a vital role in maintaining morale
during very difficult times; and
WHEREAS, During the Vietnam Conflict, 98% of the wounded
patients who made it to the hospital survived, due largely in
part to the courage, dedication and sacrifice of the nurses; and
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth acknowledges the significant
service of nurses during the Vietnam Conflict; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor and
recognize the individuals from this Commonwealth who served as
nurses during the Vietnam Conflict.
