A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of April 2015 as "Landscape Architecture
Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Landscape architecture originated in ancient times,
specifically within the cultures of Persia, Egypt, Greece and
Rome, and subsisted with varying degrees of influence throughout
history to modern times; and
WHEREAS, In the mid-1800s, Frederick Law Olmsted, who is
considered the founder of American landscape architecture, first
rejected the name "landscape gardener" in favor of "landscape
architect"; and
WHEREAS, Olmsted is credited with establishing professional
standards and pioneering the concept that parks and outdoor
spaces should not only be well-designed, but serve as functional
green spaces, particularly within large congested urban areas;
and
WHEREAS, From the mid-1800s until the turn of the 20th

Century, the landscape architecture movement was born and
continued to flourish and influence the city beautification
movement; and
WHEREAS, During the Great Depression, the public works
program began, at which time landscape architecture not only had
a tremendous impact on urban planning and design, but more
importantly on the design of national and state parks, local
community projects and parkways; and
WHEREAS, For over a century, landscape architecture has
combined creativity, insight and expertise to enhance the beauty
of our Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Landscape architecture not only provides for the
design of parks, residential environments and other natural open
spaces, but also for the preservation of natural landscapes and
the conservation of historic landscapes; and
WHEREAS, Landscape architecture balances artistic and
scientific principals in planning, design and management of
natural and man-made environments; and
WHEREAS, Landscape architecture has made a tremendous
contribution to the quality of life of residents of this
Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, The design of community centers, plazas and
streetscapes continue to rejuvenate communities throughout this
Commonwealth; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
month of April 2015 as "Landscape Architecture Month" in
Pennsylvania.
